Hyponatremia – Sodium Deficit Calculation

Formula for Correcting Hyponatremia:

  • Change in serum Na =   (infusate Na – serum Na)  /  (total body water +1)
  • Total body water = weight (Kg) x 0.6    [or x0.5 in women]

Infusates:

  • 3% saline = 513 mEq/L
  • 2% saline = 348 mEq/L
  • 0.9% saline = 154 mEq/L
  • Ringer’s Lactate = 130 mEq/L
  • 0.45% saline = 77 mEq/L
