Hounsfield Units

Hounsfield Units

The Hounsfield scale or CT numbers, named after Sir Godfrey Newbold Hounsfield, is a quantitative scale for describing radiodensity.  Table 1 is a simple list of Hounsfield units for body tissues identified in a head CT.  The data is very useful when identifying structures in a CT scan and must be committed to memory.  Table 2 is a more comprehensive list.
